"Jim was great to work with during my job search. I found Jim to be very personable and easy to work with. What I most appreciated about Jim was the way he routinely kept in touch with me. He was easy to reach and  was quick to return all of my calls."

Best Practices for Candidates PDF Print E-mail

2) Your resume with a cover letter.

We are adept at reading and understanding resumes, but we are not so good with minds. It may not be apparent to us from your resume what position you are seeking, what area of the country you would like to live in or what your career goals are. Even the best written resume can leave out important information.

Send us a cover letter that speaks to these topics. If there is a Position Description that you are responding to, please identify the position and include, in the PD, why you are qualified for the position and do so, point by point. It makes a difference to us to know that the candidate has taken the time and thought through their qualifications for a specific position as opposed to just sending us paper.

3) Send your resume, cover letter and completed PD via e-mail.

When you send your resume by email, send it as an attachment. Be certain that your name, address, city, state, email address and phone numbers are clear and at the top of your resume.

Do not send the resume in an outdated version of software. Be specific in your resume as to the position you want to move into and why.

We suggest for many reasons that you use a professional resume writer. We do not perform this work, but will refer you to several professionals to choose from.

4) Phone calls

It is not necessary for you to call after sending us your resume. We have an excellent cataloging system, tried and true. Before we parse a resume we read it and assign it to a position. We will call you if we feel there is an immediate need to speak. If we do not speak on the first call, please call us back with a date, time, time zone and number on which to reach you and mention the specific position we need to discuss.

5) Interview with us in the same manner that you would interview with an employer, mostly...

Our first responsibility is to the client. We represent the client's interest when you are interviewed. We try to act as a "Glass Conduit" and have a high success rate in doing so. Treat us with the same respect, integrity and professionalism that you would want to present to a prospective client. Be honest, positive, knowledgeable and confident. Be honest. You want to be more "upfront" with us than you usually would be with a client. The more we know about you, the easier it will be for us to describe you in the best light.

We are gatekeepers and if you don't make a favorable impression......... And, above all, always be honest with us about other opportunities, offers or interviews that you are engaging.

6) If you are not interested in a position, tell us. No Harm - No Foul.

We are paid on results and that means by successfully filling a position. This means that some or all of the expenses incurred are ours. Time is important to us and so are our relationships with our clients. Be sure not to waste our time or money by stringing us along.

This helps maintain our positive attitude about you as a person, professional and a candidate for other positions.

7) Stay in touch.

Once you make an initial contact with us, and if we do not place you stay in touch. Let us know when there is a change in your career, thinking, requirements, etc.

If we do place you, also stay in touch. Let us know how the position suits you or not and what we can do to assist you in the new position.

8) If you are not actively job hunting, and we call, speak to us.

Due to our network we often times locate the best candidates for jobs through leads and referrals. Even if you are not interested in a job change, you may know someone who is. Call us back when we call you. Many times, when professionals are happily employed, they think that they do not need to talk to us and, in fact, you may feel some guilt when we call. You should not as there is no harm in a call. There are times when a call from us may help you with your present career as we may have information to share with you that you are not aware of and by speaking to us, you enhance your present situation.

9) After you speak with a client, always call us back.

Give us feedback after visits and telephone interviews. We want to aim accurately and equally as important work out any minor problems that may have come up during the present interview.. We will be "running interference" between you and the potential client. Don't leave us out of the loop once the interview process begins. Use our skill in negotiations to express any concerns. This will help facilitate communication and allow some of the details to be handled at a more comfortable arm's length.

Market Shapers will act as a "Glass Conduit" between our clients and candidates. We work for the client but recognize that without great candidates we will not have placements.
